This public lecture takes a topic around the controversy of oil palm industry and the challenge to build a sustainable oil palm plantation. This lecture brings two experts in oil palm, Ir. Wawan Hardiwinata M.Si from BPDP Kelapa Sawit who explains about the way in which the oil palm industry is now aiming towards sustainability, and Dr. Elham Sumarga, academic staff member at SITH that focuses on modelling to estimate the impact of oil palm plantation on peatland in Borneo.
Discussion results in a common understanding on the importance of in-depth research on the extent to which oil palm indeed poses a threat to peatland and the socio-economic aspect of a wider society, along with the role of the government in providing policy corridor for a more environmentally friendly oil palm plantation.
